Handouts People Can Use

by Kaitlyn Miller
Some of the best kinds of marketing are those that people can get a use out of other than just as promotional tool. Each time you go to a trade show you’re going to see plenty of them, and you’d be wise to take note of their value, and see what will work for your company.

So let’s go over some of the better types of handouts and what makes them so useful.

First is calendar printing. A calendar is something everyone can make use of. Better yet, when a person puts up a calendar odds are good that that calendar will be up for the entire year. Plus, a calendar is out in the open, something people look at all the time, and so they’ll see your company name a lot. Calendar printing is also rather inexpensive, and would only need to be done and handed out once a year. Catalog printing is another example of a yearly distributed marketing medium.

Next are office supplies. Think pens, staplers, notepads, and so on. Similar to calendars, these also provide a distinctive purpose that people can make good use of. Who doesn’t need more pens or notepads around the office? I can’t recall the last time I bought a book of notepads because I can always find one for free if I go to enough conventions or seminars. They may not be the most exciting giveaway, but they do their job and they keep your name close to people.

T-shirts or other clothing are a little less common. It isn’t too difficult to get your company name put on a t-shirt or on a jacket if you feel like spending a little more money. I have plenty of t-shirts I still wear on a regular basis that I got for free. A standard, normal t-shirt is something a lot of people can use, and will likely stay with them for years to come.

Of course, t-shirts carry with them a higher cost to make, and sizes might become a problem, so you’ll have to decide for yourself if you think this is the best kind of promotional item for you.

And if none of these suggestions work for you try to come up with something different than anything you’ve seen before. I was given a plastic slinky not so long ago with a company name printed up the side. Not exactly the most useful item to be handed, but it definitely caught my eye and kept my attention, so there’s always something to be said for creativity.

Going for the odd gets your name noticed and is great at starting up conversations. You’ll also be able to get word to spread about you, and increase the number of people coming to you if only to see the interesting hand out you brought along. Every person you talk to equals an opportunity for a sale, so don’t pass them up.

Full color brochures became popular for a reason, and one thing you don’t want is to be the only company at a convention not handing something out. You might be remembered for it, but then again, it won’t necessarily help your business.
