How to Patent an Invention

by Walter Jackson
My friend thought I had lost my mind when I decided to start researching how inventions get patented. My friend have always seen me as a little crazy, and I think they have a decent claim. Far out ideas and unusual concepts, seem to always draw me. Originality and sheer mental inquisitiveness are the two things that stand out. I am excited to think of something that has not been thought of before, though it may not be the most rational thing to think of. People looked at me as though I had gone insane when I started filing for a patent for my invention.

Just because I wouldn’t discuss it, it didn’t keep my friends from offering their opinions. It’s not that I feared them stealing my invention patents or something. It’s not that I don’t have confidence in my friends; I just don’t like to talk about project while I’m in the midst of them. Once I get to talking, I usually don’t manage to finish my project. My theory was that I could talk about my invention patents all day after I had filed for them. During the period in between, though, I intended to remain silent.

Inventions are much harder to patent that you might think. As you can see, obtaining an invention patent requires numerous steps. To start, and this is not easy, find out if someone has already made something similiar to your idea. However, it only gets harder after that. To someone with skills and education in drafting, getting a patent for their invention may be fairly simple. I found it really hard. You should jot down every little piece of how your invention work and you would need to document it thoroughly with graphs and charts. It wouldn’t be surprising to learn that dozens of inventors pass by filing their patents each year because the process takes too much time, energy and money.

In the end, though, I am fairly certain that patents on inventions are worth it. Making a great amount of money off of my invention is part of my dream, but that’s not all there is to it. In order to make their life easier or more pleasant, I want to see people making use of something that I have invented. This, more than anything, is the driving force behind great inventors. The history of patents is lengthy and interesting, consisting of stories of eccentric geniuses who have the goal of improving the future with inventions.
